One Room Challenge Week 5 | Measure Twice, Cut Once

Ya’all, we got one week left!!! We are finally to what I like to do most, the styling! But all that will be shared next week when the room is finished! Here’s a little sneak peek of some of the treasures I’ve been saving for it.

If you’re new here and to the One Room Challenge. You can read about the challenge HERE. To see what we’ve done these past weeks check it out here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4.

Now, let’s talk about what we did this week! The hardware is on, the custom closet is built, antique dresser was refinished and is now in my possession, vintage rug arrived, bench made, and more little trinkets and treasures were purchased.

When I was looking for hardware for this room I came across Signature Hardware. Their designs are so detailed and have this unique, Victorian modern look. I haven’t seen anything else like it before and knew their pieces would give that wow factor. Plus they had so many options in brass!!!! Bonus! This Rice Mortise Lock Set below is by far the prettiest knob I have ever laid eyes on. I mean, look at this! I’m incredibly grateful to have them as a sponsor. These pieces elevate the whole room.

If you’ve never installed a lock set in a door before, like me, there’s some things you need to know. This is a great How To video for this project. It even lists the tools you need. Since I used a door that had a standard knob on it previously, it was a tad trickier than using a new one. We had to make sure we lined the door plates up so they covered the hole that was already there. It took a bit of work to figure out, but it was soooo worth it! The places around the strike plate that we didn’t chisel out perfectly, we used wood filler and you can’t even tell. It is so beautiful I could cry!

I decided I wanted longer handles on the closet because I felt it would give more of a grand feel, almost like an antique wardrobe. Pictured below are the Colmar Solid Brass Pulls by Signature Hardware that I chose. I am pretty much in love with how it looks.

However, I learned that there is a reason why you put knobs on closet doors in the middle by the hinges, they slide open smoothly that way. With the handles closer to the edge of the door I have to press a thumb on the inside of the door to pull it open. Which, is a tad annoying, but totally fine now that we know what to do. The things we do for the sake of design. I don’t regret my decision one bit. #Worthit

Even before the challenge I knew I needed to do a more custom situation for this closet. Little kids tend to have lots of books, toys, small things that are rarely used. So I needed somewhere to store it all. Creating three extra cubbies did the trick. Plus we still have plenty of hanging space for clothes.

In this process I learned some more; not all walls are straight and not all walls have studs. So we measured and measured again. The front measured more narrow than the back. That is why they say, measure twice, cut once. We had to cut everything a little crooked to fit in perfectly. We also had to add wood pieces along the side of the wall to set the shelves on since there were no studs. You can see what we did below. I have them already filled and in use. Creating a functional closet is worth its weight in gold!

I found this adorable little antique trunk for $5. It was rough and the lid wasn’t attached. It had the perfect red color, leather pieces, and brass tacks in it. I knew I could use it in this room somehow. So we turned it into a bench! I had Dad add these pieces of wood on the bottom as feet. He had cut them off the posts of the crib that was mine as a baby. It made this piece even more special. I can’t believe he held onto them all these years. You also get a little sneak peek of the rug I got from Online Oriental Rugs!

So what’s left for this week? Finish the wall shelves, do styling with the two full totes of treasures and antique books that I’ve been stashing away, and hang the wall collage. We are getting down to the finishing touches, which is my favorite part. I can’t wait to share it all with you!
