One Room Challenge Week 4 | It’s all in the Woodwork

PHEW!!! Week 4 has been one heck of a week! All the major pieces are finalized!!

The antique carved wood bed is officially refinished and SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL. We got the ceiling medallion with the new light fixture up from Mitzi Hudson Valley Lighting. Signature Hardware pieces arrived. Found almost the exact dresser that I was on the hunt for. Just waiting for that to be ready for pick up. Beddy’s bedding arrived. PLUS we have a new sponsor, Ed of Online Oriental Rugs!

This bed makes me swoon every time I see it. The stunning carving and different toned woods. Drool…. It needed some love though. Turned out to be even more love than I anticipated, as usual. I’m so very lucky to have my dad who knows all things wood to help me bring this bed back to life.

First, we had to really clean it up and reattach pieces properly. There had been a lot of little repairs to this piece over time that weren’t done correctly. Glued this here and there, fixed some veneer. Then to address all the water damage.

The bed was warped quite a bit. We took out these center panels to clean it all really well. Then we found lots of black mold and nasty bug carcasses. Barf! Seeing all that mold made me so grateful I didn’t just put this piece in my sons room as is! I can only imagine how sick it could’ve made him!

I bought this mold killing spray from Home Depot that is meant for wood and furniture pieces. Sprayed it liberally, scraped as much of this crap out, and then I sprayed it all again. I was definitely paranoid about making sure to kill it all. Each of the inner panels had a lot of mold around the edges and probably under the veneer in the middle. I just couldn’t take the risk of missing any. I have a very hard time ‘defiling’ an antique piece, but in order to save this bed we had to create new panels.

We stained them as close to the same color as the bed frame. We mixed a couple stains to get the right look. The bed rails on the frame also needed to be replaced. Luckily, Dad made these new ones (as pictured above). The bed is a very strange size and not a standard twin. So everything had to be custom. But now, it’s as clean and sturdy as a brand new bed. It will be able to be used for another century and I call that a win! Pictured below are the stains we used, the clear coat that is sprayed over after staining, and the frame in the process.

Last week I found a ceiling medallion for $5 at an estate sale. It just happened to be the right size for the light fixture I chose, too!! Love when that happens!

With this room I really wanted to show a happy marriage of antique and modern. One major piece of that is the lighting! This sputnik style light is the Remi by Mitzi. It brought in the brass elements and paired with the medallion it’s the perfect combo!

Seeing this view above really got me so excited about how this project is coming along!!

Now head to the One Room Challenge Blog to see what all the Featured Designers and other Guest Participants are up to! Some are totally blowing my mind!

Next week, we will be adding hardware, making wall shelves, and creating a custom closet! Can’t wait!!

Love – Jenasie
