One Room Challenge Week 1 | The Baron’s Room | Inspiration and Before

Week 1 of the Fall 2019 One Room Challenge is finally here! So, today I am officially participating in one of the biggest challenges for interior design on Instagram and I’m becoming a blogger! Go big or go home right?

The One Room Challenge is a huge design challenge where 20 Featured Designers and Guest Participants transform a room in six weeks and share the progress each week. This is my first time doing this challenge as a guest participant and I can’t wait to dig in. With Better Homes and Gardens as the media sponsors for this event, it’s bound to be good.

A year ago, I visited the Pittock Mansion in Oregon. This is a stunning 1920’s mansion that overlooks all of Portland. The marble floors, Persian rugs, antique furniture; it was all such a dream. They had a Victorian child’s room, as seen in the photo above. When I first laid eyes on those dreamy carved beds it stirred so much inspiration inside me. The detail and history in each room gave me an even deeper love for that era. Then, when I found a twin bed frame at an estate sale for $50 that was so similar, I about died. I knew it was all over. This was it! I was doing the challenge and I was going all out. I didn’t want to just do a Victorian kids room, I wanted to bring some modern flair, eclectic touches, and create something that was a little extra.

I have three children, but doing the youngest’s room was the obvious choice for me. My son doesn’t have his own style yet, so I could really do whatever inspired me, while keeping him in mind. Aaand his name is Baron! What could be more fitting than a Victorian English room fit for a Baron? See what I did there…

Shortly after we moved into our house two years ago, we transitioned him from a crib to a big kid bed. I quickly threw together a room using a hand me down bed frame, a bed set from Facebook Marketplace, and things I had found in my vintage treasure excursions, since selling vintage home decor is one of my professions. It came together just fine, but it’s definitely not a room that sparks joy. Soon it’ll be my favorite room in the house! I will be keeping a few of these small decor items, but overall it’s going to be completely different. Here is what we started with.

I have always been a big fan of buying second hand and keeping things as cheap as possible. As part of this challenge I will share with you the deals I find along the way. I obviously will splurge a little because I want this room to be magnificent. Completely transforming a room costs money, but I definitely got some steals and my husband and I, with a little help from my dad, will be doing all the work ourselves. And with a huge help from my Sponsors I have been able to add some amazing elements! My Mitzi, Signature Hardware, and Roxane Gabriel Art. I will share more about all of them as the challenge goes along.

Here is a little peek into some of the design aspects that will go into the room. This bold, colorful, jaguar wall paper in Faunacation by Divine Savages, really got my creative juices flowing! That along with the bed, gave me a clear direction for the room. I am a big fan of old English style interiors and both of these fit the bill. Then, I got this My Mitzi Remi light that will bring in the brass and modern feel. Paired with some fun fabric, bold colors, and brass accents. I think I’m on the right track.

I hope you follow along to see how I take this basic room to Victorian Modern. To see current progress and even more sneak peeks, follow the journey on my Instagram stories and posts, Ms Vicious Design. I can’t wait to show you what we are doing! 1. Hi Linda! Do you mean on Instagram? Or just in this challenge? I’ll be posting updates on this blog weekly, but I post things daily on Instagram.

    1. Isn’t that a fun aspect? I’m trying to decide if I make it something special or if I leave it for the wall paper.

    1. The wall paper is the element I am thrilled about! But also terrified to hang real wallpaper for me first time!😬

  1. Love your vision for this space. It’s bold, daring and filled with fun….sounds just like your little Baron. Right? So excited to follow along with you! ~~ Susie from Chelsea Project
