Ms Vicious Design One Room Challenge | The Baron’s Room Reveal | Fall 2019

HOLY CRAP! My first One Room Challenge is finished!!! I am thrilled and relieved! I have been wanting to do this challenge for over a year now. I FINALLY got the nerves and inspiration to participate. And boy am I glad I did!! This room was just a vision in my head for months! Not only did we make it a reality, but it turned out even better than I could’ve imagined. It’s like all these pieces fell into place and I am in awe. Without further ado, I give you The Baron’s Room.

Do you love it as much as I do???

First, let’s take a quick look back at where we started with the room. HOLY TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY!

My official sponsors, that I’m so incredibly grateful for, are Mitzi by Hudson Valley Lighting, Signature Hardware, Beddy’s Beds, Online Oriental Rugs, Mox & Molly, and Roxanne Gabriel Art. I could not have taken this room to the level I did without them! I picked these companies out myself because of their amazing products. I am so glad they trusted me and saw my vision. If you know me well, you know I do things on a budget and these companies helped make my little budget have a big bang.

My main goal with this room was to show a happy marriage of old and new. To create a room filled with history, but also have that fun modern touch. One of the big ways I did that was with this amazing, zip up bedding by Beddy’s Beds paired with the antique wood bed frame. Have you ever tried to get a 4 year old to make a bed and actually liked the experience?? I’m telling you right now, I did for the first time ever!!! He freaking loves this bedding. He loves it sooo much that he convinced me to let him use it a week before photos and I was terrified he’d do something to ruin it. This bedding is STURDY, easy to clean, and each set is HANDMADE! It comes as one piece and the comforter zips on and off. This function sold me on it because it literally takes seconds to make the bed. No more picking the blankets up off the floor! The inside is a super soft minky fabric too. It came in a black and white spotted design which paired perfectly with the cheetah theme and is super versatile for any room. It also came with the pillowcases, which I thought was great that you don’t have to buy those separately. As you can see, Baron is pumped about it!

Another aspect bringing in the look of the two styles are the Signature Hardware pieces. These pieces are like an ode to antique hardware. I got the beauty of the old style, but the quality and sturdiness of new. These stunning Lloyd shelf brackets gave that wow factor while also being bookends! They weren’t meant to be hung this way, but I’m a woman with a vision. Yet again, I am creating a room with a 4 year old in mind. The last thing I wanted was for him to constantly knock off the books and pretty treasures. My solution was to hang them upside down. It shows off the hardware even more this way. We did have to get a bit creative though. In order to get them to attach to the wood and be able to hold the weight we had to use two small one inch L brackets underneath each shelf. We screwed the brackets into the studs for extra sturdiness. They were so small though and under the shelf I don’t think you can even tell they are there! Win!

I showed you the Rice Mortise knob last week, but this beauty deserves another peek. It’s so dang pretty and it has skeleton keys!!

A couple weeks ago I found Ed from Online Oriental Rugs. As I was perusing his online shop just to drool at all the dreamy rugs, I spotted this rug. I didn’t even know I needed a new rug for this room until I saw this one. IT’S PERFECT!!! The colors and style were a great combo of vintage with the clean geometric lines that you see in modern pieces! The rug is so thick and soft. I really love how it feels between my toes. Do you determine how awesome a rug is by how it feels on your feet, too??? Ed was amazing to work with. His shop is full of seriously stunning rugs in lots of different styles. If you too are rug obsessed I recommend stalking his shop to find that piece that sings to you.

Usually when I find Victorian furniture it tends to have a feminine look. The trick was to bring in a masculine vibe! I found this inspiration photo on the left below for the dresser I was on the hunt for. I wanted it small enough that he would be able to get his own clothes out of it. I started looking for it before the challenge started and I was coming up with nothing. Well, I can’t say nothing. I bought a different one that just wasn’t quite it and I was starting to panic. I didn’t want to settle on any piece of this room. So, three weeks into the challenge I decided to check out Euro Treasures Antiques. They have an extensive collection that the owner has brought to Utah from Liverpool England. The store is like an antique paradise. There were soooo many pretty dressers and I felt like Goldilocks. Too big, too small, too dark, and then I spotted it. It was propped on another dresser and it was sooo close to being perfect. One drawer was sticking, the knobs needed to be stained to match, and there weren’t feet on the bottom like I had envisioned. Scott was so incredibly kind and addressed all my concerns and turned this into the exact dresser of my dreams. He also sold it to me for a great price all while going above and beyond to make this the perfect piece for the room! Could I have gotten any closer to my inspo photo?? I think not! The piece and the bed are also perfectly period appropriate I couldn’t have gotten a better match.

Now, finding rad vintage pieces is my forte. However, I usually am not trying to fill an entire room with cool things that may or may not work in a month. So I was pumped when my thrifty soul sister Lindsey of Mox & Molly said she’d jump on board with some of these details. Baron was most excited about the super rad leather cheetah and I can’t blame him! She also scored me that hippo print, round blue tufted throw pillow, and vintage books!

Roxane Gabriel Art created this painting of oranges with the prettiest blue and turquoise background. I knew that was the piece I wanted from her collection. It reminds me of my childhood in California picking oranges straight off the tree. I was my sons age when I did this and it’s such a vivid memory. Now, every time I enter the room I’ll be reminded of these times and how magical childhood is. Roxane creates beautiful pieces with a thick oil paint technique giving her paintings so much texture and dimension. It all just pops beautifully.

Although it wasn’t sponsored, the amazing gentlemen over at Divine Savages were so kind to give me a discount on the wallpaper of my dreams!!! They also sent me the Savage Birds print that fit perfectly in an antique gesso frame I recently sourced. Doesn’t it work so well in this wall collage? The wallpaper is a really great quality and is a show stopper in this room!

I’m pretty smitten with how the wall collage and this dresser top vignette turned out. Those are by far my fav things to do in a room! Every other piece in this room was a piece I’ve either thrifted or found at an estate sale. The frames, mirror, art, lion heads, tin toys, planters, nightstand, fan, books, etc…. I have been hoarding all the things blue, red, gold, and animal for the past few months to make sure I’d have the exact pieces I would need for the space. Except, that adorable tiny brass bike was my grandmas and the orange metal box was the hubby’s grandpas from his military days. I love adding in pieces that remind us of people we love that are no longer with us. Those are the true treasures.

And here is a shot of the dreamy light situation. This is the Remi light by Mitzi Hudson Valley Lighting. The style brought in more of the modern look and paired with that ceiling medallion, Voila!

None of this could’ve happened with out the help of my amazing, supportive, and talented husband and Dad! These two are the real MVP’s! My husband, Chris, dedicated his free time this entire 6 weeks to doing every little thing I asked of him even if it sounded ridiculous or was unconventional. And he didn’t even complain when we spent our 11th Anniversary working on this room. He supports me in everything I do and I couldn’t ask for a better partner. He also really picked up the slack in our home and in the parenting department. So grateful the kids got on board and helped where they could too!

My dad is so dang talented. He is a wizard in wood working and knows how to fix EVERYTHING!! He refinished a bed that was extremely water damaged, custom built a closet, turned an old trunk into a bench, and hand-chiseled the door to install the mortise lock. He did all of this and said to repay him in hugs, some dinner, and not to spit on his grave when he dies. Dad!!! (insert eye roll) Now, I can give a mean hug, but I owe him big time!

And are those cheetah wall hooks I snagged from H&M Home perfect or what???

I want to thank Linda and her whole team at the One Room Challenge for putting together such a fun event and bringing so many creatives together for inspiration and support! I have loved watching these rooms transform. To see all the big reveals check out the Featured Designers and Guest Participants. And a huge thanks to Better Home and Gardens for being the Media Sponsors!

Also, did Megan Osburn kill it with these photos or what??? She captured exactly what I was hoping to for this room. I could stare at these photos all day.

And last, but not least, THANK YOU!!!!!! Thank you for reading these blogs, my Instagram posts, for the kind messages of encouragement, for helping and supporting me in the biggest design experience I’ve done yet. Having friends like you has meant the world to me and I couldn’t have done it without you having my back!

Now, I’ll have that glass of wine.

Cheers! Jenasie
