This is definitely a challenge I will never forget. I signed up for the 2020 Spring ORC challenge after we were already on stay-at-home orders and the same day we had a big earthquake in Utah. Am I crazy or am I crazy?? The pandemic was in full force and my entire April freed up. Perfect timing to start a project. Then, the One Room Challenge was post poned until May, and two weeks were added (so 8 weeks instead of 6) to help all of the designers have the chance of actually being able to complete the space and hope items would arrive in time. 8 weeks to design a room, order and buy supplies, homeschool 3 children, and deal with a global pandemic. Ya’all, WE MADE IT!!!! I was really questioning it and my sanity, but we survived and I have the modern, Art Deco bathroom of my dreams!!! I’m so happy I’m crying.
Someone pinch me! I am absolutely dying over how it turned out. There were so many times in the process that I questioned if it would come together the way I had envisioned. It’s honestly better than my mind could even create. Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Below are the before photos. Is this really the same room?? You can see it all in Week 1.
The vintage item I love the most, and am the most known for, are vintage mirrors. This pair of mirrors finally came to me after months of searching. The funniest part, I already had one exactly like them! We inherited it from my husbands grandfather. I had always loved it and thought these would be the perfect way for me to add vintage and meaning into this space. They give a whole vibe!
Pair them with these insanely beautiful brass and black sconces from Illuminate Vintage and we have the perfect combo. Clean lines and gaudy gold curves. That is where it’s at!
I have a deep love for brass, vintage and modern. I feel its resurgence in popularity is all thanks to the vintage pieces. Changing our hardware and faucets to brass made a world of a difference. The Menlo Park pulls from Schaub and Company really brought out that classic feel.
One of the hugest impacts was this tile. Being able to tile over the existing accent tile saved us a ton of time and money. Read all about how we did it here in Week 6. The black is sleek and modern and ties into the rest of the space.
The first company I reached out to after signing up for the challenge was Pepe & Carols. They have the most beautiful brass shelving units and I knew I neeeeeeeded one for this space. I had a random small wall next to the tub that I could cover in plants if I just had the right shelf. Krystal, the owner, was able to customize this shelf to fit my spot and vision exactly! It houses some of my fave vintage treasures ( because no space of mine would be complete with out vintage smalls) and all my plant babies. Pepe & Carols have so many amazing vintage inspired pieces that you have got to check out.
Right before the lockdown I helped a client/friend liquidate her vintage rental pieces. She had a magical room full of treasures. When it was all over she had a whole bunch of vintage chandeliers left. She asked if I wanted them for free! FREE!!! I, being the vintage collector(hoarder) that I am, could not say no to a bunch of vintage chandeliers. A month into planning this bathroom and looking at a ton of chandeliers online it dawned on me that I had quite a few downstairs in my shop. I had the perfect chandy in my shop all this time!! I can’t believe it took me that long to even consider checking my own inventory. So grateful Honest John Bitters thought of me before giving them to the thrift store! We spray painted the base a less shiny brass and voila’, it’s absolutely perfect. The cylinder glass pieces with the circular bases add in even more curves to the space. I’m obsessed!
The barn doors that we revamped in Week 7 gave me the detail I was hoping to achieve. By mimicking the wallpaper (Week 2) I was able to tie the space together even more. These made a huge difference in our bathroom AND in our bedroom! Two birds, one stone.
This bathroom gave me a focus for so much time spent at home, stuck indoors. It gave me a purpose and a timeline. It pushed my ability to envision things without seeing them in real life. It took my heart and soul to complete. I couldn’t be more in love with a space that went on a deep emotional rollercoaster with me.
I want to thank my husband for being the muscle and brains behind so much of my creativity, for being my sounding board, and for having to listen to me waffle on so many elements of the space. For cutting a million tiles, boards, etc.., and for going to the hardware store more times than I want to count.
Thank you to my sponsors Schaub & Company, Illuminate Vintage, and Pepe & Carols! Thank you for trusting me to make your pieces shine even when the world feels like it’s in chaos. I appreciate your generosity and faith in me.
And a HUGE thank you to Linda, Calling it Home, Better Home & Gardens, and the whole One Room Challenge crew. Thank you for putting on such an amazing and inspiring event. Thank you for working through all the obstacles that were thrown at you. Thank you for supporting this amazing interior design community! I have met so many incredibly talented people through this event and I am forever grateful.
Now, I am off to have a glass of wine in my new, beautiful, bathroom suite!

Can you give me the source for your vanity hardware please? Thx!
Hi Monica! Yes, it’s from Schaub & Company. I have the exact pulls and the company linked in the post. If you scroll and see Menlo Park and Schaub & Company highlighted in blue it is a direct link.
It turned out so beautiful!!!
Thank you so much Elisa!
Fabulous.
Thank you Brenda!!
So beautiful. I’m in the beginning of a guest bathroom reno. Unfortunately, it’s all on my dime, of which I have very few! 😉
As in all our projects, we have already had set backs and budget gremlins….we busted the tub we weren’t planning on replacing. :/
I am looking for a gold spray paint that will give me a brushed brass finish for some hardware. Do you have any recommendations?
Hi Robin! Designing on a budget is definitely my fave kind of challenge. I’m so sorry to hear about the tub mishap! This project I used the Rustoleum Metallic Paint + Primer Vintage Brass spray paint. It still looked pretty, but to give a more real brass look I added Rub n Buff Antique Brass on top. That is my go-to in giving a natural brass look. I haven’t found a spray paint that is perfect coloring as is.
This turned out so well! And it’s totally you!
Thank you Jami! It’s definitely my style!
It’s amazing what a difference changing that strip of tile in the shower to that sleek black subway til made!
Thank you Lindsey! That tile strip has made such a huge impact! It might be my fave part of the transformation.
Great final shot you silly girl. Love ever single thing. Esp the sconces ! High falutin for sure.
