Split Level Entry Upgrade | 2020 Fall One Room Challenge

Well, here we are on our third One Room Challenge and it’s our second one during a pandemic! Am I crazy person? Maybe. Do I know how to relax? I’m not sure… ha ha. I’m excited to put my heart and energy into creating another beautiful space in my home. Especially, since that is where we spend all our time these days.

If you are new to this, The One Room Challenge is a 6 week long design challenge where you transform a room/space and share the process through Instagram and blogging along the way. I like to participate in the challenge because it gives me a hard deadline. It helps me to get a detailed design together and plan out exact dates of when things will be done. Without these deadlines, projects can really drag out. It also helps me to make decisions. I am a waffler. I can always narrow things down to two. I struggle hard to just pick! This timeline definitely doesn’t give me time to waffle. I also have met so many other inspiring accounts that support and lift each other up during the process. It really is exciting to see what everyone comes up with!

Now, let’s get down to it! We are going to be transforming our interior and exterior entry. Why did I chose that? The entry of a home is the first thing and last thing anyone see’s in your house. I want ours to be exciting and inspiring. Right now, it’s just very drab, dated, and has dingy carpet. Yuck. I’ve been dying to transform it ever since we moved in. Let me show you where we started and what the plan is. Below is where we are starting with the interior entry space.

There is this weird framed out paneling because there were windows around the door originally. Sometime down the road someone replaced them with a rock front. They framed it out and used an ugly faux wood paneling. I tried painting it a dark gray to give it some character and well, it fell flat. I added some art and a coat rack, but it really never felt quite right. It was more of a band-aid.

Above is the exterior. It’s very beige/orange which is not my color(s). We recently decided to paint our exterior and give it a modern look, while also keeping this awesome rock wall. So it made sense to make the exterior entry a lot more appealing during this challenge too! It’s all about first impressions, right?

Below is the carpet and tile. Both are very dated and dingy. It’s going to be so satisfying to rip this out!

I did find this awesome chandelier, below, a couple years ago. I gave it a tiny upgrade and it is a huge improvement from the light before. As much as I do love it, I found another amazing mid-century one that could be perfect for here. I find one light and now the whole space deserves an upgrade! Ha ha… I’m not sure my husband likes my logic, but luckily I convinced him to go along with it.

Here are more views of the areas that we will be changing up. I want to make sure you get the full effect of how badly this space needs some love.

You like those beaded curtains at the bottom though, right??

The PLAN:

  • Rip off paneling and trim
  • Drywall and mud wall flat
  • Paint walls and ceiling
  • Remove carpet on stairs, landing, and hall and replace with luxury vinyl flooring from Factory Flooring Direct
  • Cut and paint hardboard to add to stair risers
  • Remove old tile and lay new calacatta tile
  • Paint wood railing black
  • Add trim and baseboards
  • Hang Milton & King Crane wallpaper
  • Paint and install new front door
  • Install new Emtek smart keypad entry door handle and hardware
  • Hang new exterior lights
  • Install Modern House Numbers
  • Change out all electrical switches
  • Paint exterior big railing and remove small railing
  • Hang new/old chandelier

Simple right?!

Now, for the MOODBOARD! Since I am a tried and true waffler, I am sharing two moodboards. One with Milton & King Cranes wallpaper in a blue colorway and in a black colorway. I still have not decided on it. If you wouldn’t mind, please weigh in on which I should choose. I just love them both.

Today I ordered the new front door. Thanks to Covid and factories being shut down for so long, the door is backordered and won’t arrive for 5 weeks. Eeek! So cross your fingers for me that it arrives in time. The door will really make a huge impact.

I’d like to thank the sponsors that have come on board for this challenge. I appreciate them believing in me and trusting in my design abilities. Factory Flooring Direct, Milton & King, Emtek, and Modern House Numbers.

I hope you like what you see so far and continue to follow along! To watch my progress in real time, follow me on my Instagram @msviciousdesign. I will share so much of this process in Stories. It’s time to get to work!

Cheers,

Jenasie

  1. Crazy? Yes, but if anyone can do it you can. Your energy makes me tired. We all benefit by your talent. Do what you do best and never stop. Can’t wait to follow the journey. You’re the BEST !

Jenasie, this is going to be gorgeous! I can’t wait! As for the wallpaper…. Just looking straight at the moodboards alone, I’m leaning toward the black, but knowing that you have a wallpaper with blue on it near the top of the stairs, plus the fact that you have those two gorgeous blue vintage sofas in your living room makes me think that the blue crane wallpaper would flow better in your space, especially since the entryway is a preview of things to come. Thoughts?

    1. Amy, you just said my thoughts exactly! Great minds! Ha ha.. I was sure that the black was going to be it, but then I saw it in my space and started to be drawn to the blue!

  3. I put a door like this on my ranch home last year and I love it so so much! Along with a good paint job it transformed my exterior and adds some light inside which I also love. Can’t wait to see how it looks on your place!
