Designing with Contrast | Week 4 | Spring One Room Challenge

It’s week 4 and we are officially half way through the Spring One Room Challenge! We are at a point where everything feels like it’s starting to come together. This was a big week for finalizing some pieces! I was having major decision fatigue and I finally pulled the trigger on a few items.

If you are new here, the One Room Challenge is where 20 Featured Designers and many Guest Designers, like me, transform a space in 8 weeks. We blog the whole process and share tips and tricks along the way. There are so many inspiring designs happening this Spring season! This week we painted the wall opposite the wallpaper and it’s WHITE! I know that is super shocking. So many of you guessed black and rightfully so. I’m always going on about painting everything black. Ha ha ha… Now, let me tell you why I chose white. First, when I think of a bathroom I think of it as where you get clean. White is a natural color to give that fresh clean look. It also does wonders to brighten a dark space. Our bathroom and master bedroom get very little natural light. White seemed the best way to really open up and brighten the room. Another huge reason I chose white is so that it could be a bright contrast from the very fun and busy wallpaper across from it. I feared black would make everything blend together. One last reason, is because we are painting those barn doors you can see and I don’t want to give anything away, but they really will pop against that white.

Picking a white you like can be challenging! Have you ever looked at how many shades of white there are? It’s mind blowing. After lots of trial and error I have found Polar Bear white by Behr to be the perfect clean white! It’s not stark and cold, but still a very bright white. Almost all of my house is painted this color now and it’s so satisfying. Everything looks so crisp and clean against it. Plus, it makes every other color pop. If you need a white paint I highly recommend this one. I almost always buy Behr Marquee paint. It’s a little more expensive, but the quality is sooo worth it. It covers in less coats of paint than most other paints I’ve tried. *This is not sponsored. I just love it that much.*

Choosing lighting for this space was huuuge. I wanted something super modern, but had that bit of art deco flare. These amazing sconces by Illuminate Vintage are the perfect touch. The black and brass finishes go perfectly with the wall paper. The hexagon base works with the shapes and lines of the wallpaper. Plus, the quality is amazing. They have so many options and styles that have a modern and vintage feel. You’ve got to check out their whole shop. I’m so grateful they were willing to sponsor these lights. They really elevate the space.

Have you ever had a detail make you swoon? That’s what these pulls and knobs below from Schaub & Company are doing for me! The cabinets looked amazing once painted and then I got these pulls on and I about fainted. Do they pop beautifully on the black or what?! It’s all about the contrast. I chose their Menlo Park style because it has a classic and modern look in one. They are a nice, high quality handle that I know will hold up forever.

And finally, we were able to take a few days break to celebrate my 35th birthday!! We are located in Utah and an hour from Salt Lake City is a huge, natural, hot spring called The Homestead Crater. It looks like a volcano filled with warm water! I can’t believe this is only our first time visiting. The crater is estimated to be 10,000 years old, it’s 65 feet deep, and the water stays between 90-96 degrees always. The water was a beautiful teal blue. It really was a magical place to visit. Now, all my kids want to go here for their birthdays. It was a great way to get away from the chaos and relax.

In case you missed it, here’s a look back at Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3.

This coming week is going to be huge for the project. We will finally be covering the accent tile in the shower. I am still on the fence about whether to paint the tile or tile over it. One feels like a band-aid and one feels more permanent, but also a huge undertaking. I still haven’t decided…. like I said, decision fatigue. Wish me luck! And check back in next week to see how it turns out. Or you can follow along on my Instagram as I share the process in real time!

Cheers friends,

Jenasie
