Grand Millennial Teen Bedroom

Designing this teen room was largely influenced by the vintage items I found. I don’t think I initially intended on a Grand Millennial room, but here we are! It also became very moody, eclectic, with some cottagecore vibes just like my teen wanted. It was fun letting the pieces make the room.

We have gone through a few different versions in this room, but it was time to add some sophistication. My daughter is 15 and wanted a room that spoke to her. She spends a lot of time in there and I believe your surroundings truly affect your mood. I definitely wanted this room to feel cozy, serene, and inviting. Below are a couple of the before versions of the room that didn’t quite hit the mark.

Below is the moodboard that got the room going. We ended up pivoting with the art, but this gave us the over all feel we were going for.

I wanted her to lead this design and make every decision with me. So, we started with a color. She chose Money Moves by Clare Paint. It’s a brighter sage green that is calming, but also fun. I love that it has a warm feel that livens the room up. I found a lot of sage greens had gray undertones which felt dreary. Money Moves has the perfect amount of brightness to it.

Three years ago I found this antique head and footboard at an estate sale. The last day of the sale everything was free as they were needing to clear out the property. So, I took my chances and waited until the last day to see if it was still there and it was! I scored it for FREE! However, we needed to build the side rails and slats for it that ended up costing us about $100 since wood is so expensive. I’d say it was worth it to have a beautiful bed that has history and is better quality than a lot of new ones out there. It feels very queenly and regal and that’s what my daughter loved about it. I really love when I can save a piece and give it a whole new life.

My favorite thing we added to this room is the STUNNING brass Octavia lights gifted from Sazerac Stitches. The first time I saw these I knew I needed them in my life. Sazerac has so many amazing lighting options and I couldn’t go wrong with any of them, but the Octavia has the beautiful, brass flowers that give it such a romantic feel.

I spent a lot of time at my vanity as a teen and I wanted to make sure my daughter also had a space she loved to get ready at. The room is tiny so we had to maximize the space we had and have multi-function pieces. Using the desk as a vanity and nightstand was key. I tried a few different vanity/desks in here hoping something I already had would work and the wood felt too heavy next to the bed. I got on Fb Marketplace and searched gold glass vanity and this popped up. I found the exact same one online new for $600 which is insane. It’s not worth that, but it was worth the $150 I spent and the sanity I saved by buying it instead of searching for months for another cheaper one. Ha ha ha… I usually try to wait for a vintage piece to use, but this time it worth it to spend a little more to have it now. The glass gives a visual break in the room and the gold gives it a rich, luxe feel.

Almost everything else in this space I bought secondhand or already had on hand. The green stone top dresser, seen below, I scored on marketplace for $200 with a different space in mind. I’m so glad the style and color just happened to fit in this room perfectly! I got the mirror and sconce for about $20 from a friends vintage sale. The other decor pieces were secondhand/thrift finds that were less than $25 for all of it!

These curtains I bought at Ikea a few years ago for another space and never ended up using them. I purchased the extra long ones since they were on sale for $40 for the pair. Once I hemmed them to fit I had extra fabric to cover the vanity stool in! That was an extra win!

The art is Copper Trees by Mel Remmer’s. I framed it in an antique frame I already had that I’ve been dying to use! I love the luxe feel of the velvet curtains combined with the brass light, frame, and art.

The art above the bed are some of my favorite pieces I’ve ever gotten. They are both originals and bring in that dark moody feel. The floral still life I got at an estate sale for $48 and I had it in my living room gallery wall for a long time. I’ve been dying to find it a new place. The portrait I found at the thrift store for $5 and it’s signed and dated 1926!!

The white bedding is Beddy’s zip up bedding that I love! It always make the bed look made and tidy. I was in shock when I found this at the thrift store for $8!!! I think Beddy’s are worth every penny, but I’m still glad I got to save my penny’s this time. The quilt was gifted from a neighbor and it really gives that cottagecore aesthetic.

The most important part of this whole room is how my daughter feels about it. She said it feels like a princess room! I call that a win!

I hope this inspires you to try using secondhand pieces, searching Fb Marketplace, and using things you already have in a new way! It sure makes a room more unique and special that way.
